Soulful Steps: Into Autumn

Praying with a Tree

The simple idea is to find a tree and spend a bit of time with it. When you are ready, use these words to help you reflect on the tree's being, and to deepen your connection with Creation, and with your Creator!

Oh tree, whose roots reach downward into darkness - teach me to feel my way into the richness of a world beneath the surface, too.

As you work with mycorrhizal fungi to connect the wood-wide-web below - may I, too, join with you and the community of Creation in unseen, quiet, miracle ways.

Just as you hold fast to earth, may we both find the ground of our being together in God.

As you grow tall, and stand strong, may I come to know what I stand for, in strength, too.

May I not be so tense and taut that I cannot bend, or sway, or dance like you.

The space between your branches is lovelier than cathedrals. May my presence be as spacious as yours. And may we both be there for those who seek our shade and shelter.

The scars on your bark seem to prophesy that my own wounds, in time, will heal as well.

Your new leaves in spring help me to welcome my own fresh shoots, even when I’m wrinkled, gnarled, and lightning-stricken.

And as you blaze then shed your autumn colours, I remember how the ground beneath my own feet is made rich by all that I, too, am letting go of.

Your blossom, fruits, seeds and nuts, are like a celebration, the sheer abundance of being. If I could be just half as generous, I’d be a planting for the Lord’s splendour, too.

Oh tree, you go nowhere, and I can always come to visit. Thank you, my friend. But you travel so vividly through every season, too.

Remind me, when all I do is do do do, that I can also be, like you.

Rooted and rising and wholly here in your Creator’s presence.

May I be, wholly here, with you - and all of us, here, together in God.

Amen.
